If you're a hockey fan, which I know none of you are, then you've heard over the past several weeks that the New York Rangers have been in serious talks with current Leafs UFA center, Michael Peca. This is a direct result of the trading of center Matt Cullen. I liked Cullen, I did, but at 2.8 million per year as a 3rd line center, he was fairly overpaid. If they really wanted to though, Glen Sather and company could have held onto him. I mean, c'mon this team lines their damn hallways in gold.
......
This, to me, is an obvious step backwards for a progressing Rangers club. Instead of hanging on to a 40 pt a year 3rd line center or having one of the highly touted prospects biting at the bit get a shot, they go out and try to sign an aging, injury prone veteran who just isn't what he used to be. They're putting themselves in a bad position, because Peca will play no more than 50 games and will eat up at least 1.5 million a year. On a team that is going to have obvious cap issues with the signings they made this past summer, this will hurt more than help.
.......
Seriously, this is like having 2 thoroughbred horses in your stable and instead of riding them you go for the 15 year old donkey who has equestrian parkinsons. It's a stupid move in my opinion and is the essence of the Rangers and creates the suffering needed to be a fan. Shoot me.
