Well, ok. Not exactly. Although while playing golf in the Canadian Womens open pro-am, as is always with Gretzky for some reason, hockey came up. I don't get it. Why in the world would Wayne Gretzky ever want to talk about that? That's like Lawrence Taylor going to a charity event and talking about smoking rock. "Fear is not a factor, Bill Parcells". Any how, the topic that just happened to mysteriously pop up was Kevin Lowe and his perverbial rape of the Sabres and attempted assault of the Anaheim Ducks. Through all of this, Lowe still has at least one friend. Wayne "I swear I never bet" Gretzky.
............
Lowe, friend, former teammate, GM of the Edmonton Oilers and douche bag extraordinare to most NHL general managers is on the bad kids list at the moment. Lowe offered massive contracts to Buffalo's Thomas Vanek and Anaheim's Dustin Penner. To the un-or-misinformed this really may not sound like a big deal. 4 Years ago it would not have been. Although with the new CBA (collective bargaining agreement) which puts a cap on how much a team can spend, this can cause huge problems. With both players being up and coming stars and RFA's (restricted free agents) it was obvious they were going to demand a hefty raise. No one expected the raise these two would get, and the fact that it would not come from their own teams.
......
Lowe plunked down a massive 7.1 million per year deal for Vanek which was matched by Buffalo and Anaheim refused to match the 4 year 5.25 million dollar deal offered by Lowe to Penner. Both are and will be great players, but at the moment neither deserves this kind of money. These moves were seen as a tactic to put teams in a bad position wether it be in personnel or finances. Anaheim and Buffalo's general manager's made public statements denouncing the course of action Kevin Lowe was taking. Gretzky doesn't see their point of view.
....
He states...
He's not doing anything against the system or behind the backs of
anyone, and good for him," said Gretzky.
And, when asked about the deteriorating state of hockey in Edmonton he went on to say,
.....
"The facilities are outstanding and the support you get not only
from fans but from corporate sponsorship is as good as anywhere in the National
Hockey League."
.....
Let me get this straight. First he somehow gets out of all this betting crap, then he backs up Kevin Lowes war tactics. I admit, I make it far worse than it seems, is or ever will be. C'mon though! What's next, Wayne? Gonna join a street gang that's known to beat up infants for their warm booties? Or maybe you'll become the first man to start a charity organization dedicated to not finding a cure for cancer. Mr. Gretzky. You, sir. Are the devil!
